Osteopathy for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and M.E.
It is possible to treat ME effectively using a combination of osteopathy, nutrition and advice on posture, exercise and lifestyle. Sorrel is a licensed practitioner of the The Perrin Technique™, the osteopathic system of treatment for CFS/ME developed by Manchester osteopath, Dr Raymond Perrin.
What is Chronic Fatigue?
Chronic fatigue syndrome or M.E. (myalgic encephalomyelitis) presents in many different ways with symptoms which include intense lethargy, mental confusion, headaches, muscle pain, general weakness and disturbed sleep.
There is growing agreement that CFS sufferers experience prolonged activation of the “fight or flight response” which is under the control of the hypothalamus, and involves the sympathetic nervous system and the adrenal glands. The lymphatic vessels, which form the body’s natural waste disposal system, are affected by the disturbed sympathetic nerves, becoming sluggish and eventually varicosed due to failure of their valves. This results in backflow in the lymphatic system and accumulation of toxins in the body tissues and in the central nervous system, which Dr Perrin believes is the cause of many of the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, including muscle pain and weakness and brain fog and memory loss.
Osteopathic Treatment for Chronic Fatigue
Dr Perrin has discovered physical signs common to all CFS/ME sufferers and these can be used to reach a diagnosis. The Perrin Technique™ uses osteopathic techniques to improve lymphatic drainage and stimulate fluid motion around the brain and spinal cord. Manipulation of the spine further aids the drainage of toxins out of the cerebrospinal fluid. Massage of the soft tissues in the head, neck, back and chest help drain the toxins out of the lymphatic system and into the blood, where they are eventually detoxified in the liver. The treatment is very gentle but powerful: most patients experience a worsening of their symptoms following the first few treatments as a result of the toxins being released from the lymphatics into the general circulation. However this initial worsening is usually followed by a gradual improvement in the patient’s health and energy levels.
The Perrin Technique™ was developed following a discovery in 1989 during the clinical practice of osteopath Raymond Perrin. This system of osteopathic treatment alleviates many of the symptoms of CFS/ME, and its effectiveness has been demonstrated in two separate clinical trials.
No two M.E. sufferers are the same and treatment programmes have to be tailored to the individual needs of each patient. Recovery takes time with such a chronic condition but in each case full involvement in the regime is encouraged, as this will speed the recovery process. Patients are given a home massage routine, gentle exercises and advice on nutrition.
After a long distressing marriage, a very stressful job and finally a divorce, I became very tired and could sleep all day as well as night. I was very tired all the time so went to the doctor who just said it was due to long term stress and it would gradually go, but it didn’t. I then saw an advertisement from Sorrel with all the symptoms I was suffering from and saying that it was probably early signs of M.E.
Her treatment, the Perrin Technique™ involved massaging and exercises and eating the right foods, but after 3 months I felt so much better.
I have now returned to work as I like to be busy and I go jiving with my partner two or three times a month.
I am so glad I saw that advertisement.
