Listen To Your Body Before It’s Too Late?

During your day it’s a good idea to stop and take note and focus on your body. How does your body feel? Is there any tightness? How are you breathing – shallow/deep? If you work at computer, what is your default posture like? Our bodies have the ability to communicate; if we take the time to listen.

Our bodies have a great ability to adapt to the activities we put them through, whether it be a particular sport doing a repetitive action such as running or rowing, sitting at a desk for long periods of the day or typing on a computer all day long. Our bodies also adapt after suffering an injury i.e. an ankle sprain that causes us to limp and changes the way we walk. We can do all these things even when our muscles and joints aren’t functioning correctly, this is called compensation.

As time goes by, we do not realise that our body has had to change to cope with the stresses that we continually put on it. However, these compensatory patterns will only continue for so long before issues start to arise. As the saying goes ‘the straw that broke the camel’s back’: you might bend over to brush your teeth and bang! your back goes into spasm or you start experiencing tension headaches or persistent back ache. These can be tell tale signs that your body is past it’s point of compensation. Sometimes these patterns can develop over years without you really being aware however, it is not normal to experience persistent niggles or aches and pains. We should never just put it down to ‘getting old’ as I have heard many of my patients say!

Osteopathy can help to keep your body mobile and functioning optimally, limiting the risk of injury and the onset of other health issues such as headache and muscle tension.
