Caring for an elderly relative such as a parent or spouse can be emotionally draining as well as physically stressful. Watching someone you love becoming weaker and more debilitated is distressing, and perhaps more so if dementia is involved.
It is important therefore to take care of yourself emotionally as well as physically. Your GP may be a good listener and will have your mental health in mind as well as any physical injuries or stresses. If you are feeling distressed or depressed you may want to ask for a referral for counselling to help you cope, or if you prefer not to wait for an NHS referral, you may wish to speak to one of the counsellors here at the clinic.
